How to be a Precinct Chair

At the base of our American democracy are the precinct committeemen and women.  Every two years in the primary voters in each precinct elect a Republican committeeman and committeewoman.

The precint committee people should play an important role in the election process:

  • Publicly support all Republican candidates
  • Distribute yard signs and literature
  • Host or facilitate coffees or events where candidates and voters can meet
  • Support contribution efforts

And, precint people have an important function in the operations of the Republican Party.  The Johnson County precinct committee people hold a reorganization meeting after each November general election.  At the meeting, the Executive Committee (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer) is elected and delegates to the 3rd District convention are selected.

During the 3rd District convention, the delegates elect representatives to the State Convention which is held in late January.  The event, called Kansas Days, is held in Topeka.  The delegates elect state officers and one national male and female committee person to represent Kansas.

The committee people are also called upon to select and elect replacements for Republican elected officials who may have resigned their position.  The replacement fulfills the remaining term until the next regularly scheduled election for that position is held.

The Republican Party is looking for good precinct committee people who will be active and supportive of all Republican candidates in the general election.  For more information, call the Party Headquarters.   If you would like to file for election, contact the Johnson County Election office.
